Personal Statement (MBA 8011): ARUN DEO UPADHYAY I am an Engineering graduate from one of the premier Textiles engineering
colleges of India. After my graduation I joined an export oriented large business group of India. Thereafter I switched over
to Banking Industry, which in those days was considered to provide an excellent job as well as growth opportunity as a public
sector job. The officers of Public Sector Banks in India used to have one of the bestpaid jobs and assured growth opportunities.
I have worked in the Banking industry in almost all the areas but more specialization in risk analysis credit management areas
relating to international banking, for over 8 years, consistently taking on more responsibilities and refining my analytical
skills. My strengths tend to be very analytical in nature. I believe that I have good written and oral communication skills
and have consistently demonstrated ability to understand business requirements and create congenial environment for business
in all the branches/offices I ever worked. Despite my having worked in the Banking industry for over 8 years, I
still lack a well-defined career objective. With the privatization and globalization in India, the Banking Industry has now
been opened to private sector/multinational Banks, which are now coming with better products, new technologies and are posing
threat for survival of Public Sector Banks, which mostly rely on Government Grants. Now the Government has made it clear that
it is not going to extend any support to public sector companies and in near future they might be handed over to private enterprises
also. In view of these developments it has become necessary for me to equip myself with better tools to face the competition
or to grab new opportunities. Finance and risk management are near and dear to my heart but I am also interested in consulting
as well as working in multi cultural environment. I hope to meet talented students at business school who might have come
from different backgrounds/cultures and who might provide an excellent opportunity to have cross-cultural experience. I am
convinced that I will learn things during the MBA program that will change my career focus, or open up new avenues that I
had not considered. I realize, looking at my future, irrespective of my eventual career objective, that to really
make a difference, I'll need better business skills. I feel that an M.B.A would impart a professional training which I have
been lacking as I belong to a technical undergraduate study, and thus help me better understand how the professional businesses
are run. The companies with whom I had been working so far in India were all Public Sector Companies with typical Burocratic
setup, without having bothered of business as such. The M.B.A program would also provide with sound management and leadership
skills, improving my ability to lead and guide large assignments. My strong technology background coupled with my MBA will
really propel me in the direction where I seek to go. Five years from now, I hope to be in a senior level management position
in a large financial services set up. My eventual career goal is to rise to the level of a CEO in one of the fortune 500 companies.
In any services industry, the technology is moving at a speed far behind an verage managers knowledge and abilities
to institute it in todays business environments. Given the turbulent state of affairs, the techno-MBA, which is a hybrid of
technical know how and business savvy, is already an emerging force that is becoming necessary to be successful in todays
workplace. I am confident that with a technical undergraduate background and work experience in financial sector, at the end
of my MBA program, I will be able to take leadership roles in such Financial services companies whose business models are
changing dynamically. I will have a better handle on business problems thereby enabling me to bridge the gap between management
problems and technology available to solve them. You probably should care because you are looking at the profile of an individual
who is likely to be an excellent addition to the business community of financial world, in the years to come
